The Power of Firsts
How Being the First to Take a Step Can Change Your Life—and Others' Too
I recently gave a speech at Cascadia College’s inaugural Scholarship Reception event, entitled The Power of Firsts. In it, I shared my journey: from being a laid-off husband and father of two (with one on the way!) with just a high school diploma, to receiving a scholarship that allowed me to begin my higher education at Cascadia College, to ultimately earning multiple graduate degrees, working at companies like Microsoft and Amazon, and now becoming a scholarship donor at the very college where my transformation began.
“Years ago, I walked this same campus, balancing more than just coursework. I wasn’t just a student—I was working full-time, married, and raising two kids, all while trying to make ends meet. And amid all that, I made a decision that no one in my family had ever made before:
I decided to earn a college degree.”
Whenever I give speeches like this, I think about their takeaway. Will people leave thinking, “That guy is incredible,” or will they think, “That story was incredible—and I’m inspired to do something incredible too”?
I genuinely believe I’m an average person. But I also know my story is unique, and that I possess an unnatural capacity to endure pain and work harder than most—a trait that hasn’t always served me well, but one that was essential during the season when I was broke, uncredentialed, and determined to find a way to support my family.
“To the students here today, I want you to know this: you have the power to be the first.”
During my speech, I encouraged the students in the audience to embrace this challenge: “Be the first.” And I asked the donors and sponsors in the room to do the same—be the first to extend a hand, to write a check, and to invest in those who are working tirelessly to change their circumstances.
“Scholarships are so much more than financial aid. They are votes of confidence, belief in the potential of those who receive them. That belief can be transformative, empowering students to achieve things they may never have thought possible.”
As we step into 2025, it’s the perfect time to ask ourselves:
What will I be the first to do?
A new year is more than just a calendar change—it’s an invitation to reimagine what’s possible and take bold steps toward our dreams.
Education is one example, but I encourage you to dream beyond the obvious. What might being “the first” look like for you?
Could it mean:
Being the first to retire in your family?
Moving out of your hometown to pursue your dreams?
Seeking therapy to break free from generational challenges?
Building a loving family or strengthening an existing one?
Learning a new skill, picking up an instrument, or starting a creative endeavor
Advocating for a cause close to your heart?
If no one has encouraged you before, let me be the first: You can be the first.
Take my words as a providential nudge to step forward. When we dare to be the first, we don’t just change our own lives. We create ripple effects that inspire those around us and pave the way for others to follow.
To being the first,
Justin
